FIRST GRADE

Here are some of the songs the First Graders are working on in class. The First Grade general music class has the same set up as the Kindergarten class, but with different songs and listening selections.

Echo songs: The children imitate the teacher's voice by echoing after the teacher.

Caney Mi Macaro                    Purple Light                          Lucy Rabbit                  Did You Feed My Cow?

Simple Songs: The children are asked if they would like to sing these short songs as solos

Riding in a Buggy                   Go Round the Mountain

Fingerplays: Songs where the children learn hand motions to go with the song and help with inner listening

When I Was One                     Sailor Went to Sea                        Our Gallant Ship

                 Pickin' a Spot

Middle of Class Movement: About 14 minutes into class the students listen to a piece of classical music and move expressively to the music. The teacher leads them in the movement and the students follow. This gives them a foundation of movement that they will use later in elementary school.

Keeping the Beat: Students practice keeping a steady beat through movement and instrument playing. With an instrument one student will keep the beat at a tempo of their choosing, slow, medium, or fast and the rest of the class will sing the song at the soloists tempo.

Ship Sailed to China               Mulberry Bush                         Rig a Jig Jig                    Haul Away Joe

The class ends with a story song where the children don't sing and practice good audience skills and listening. It is also a time for the students to wind down for their transition back to the classroom. The songs are sung by the teacher for the students and are usually folk songs with a story such as: "There's a Hole in the Bucket" or "Froggie went Courtin'".
