Mr. G's Music Class
Third Grade
Third Grade is currently working on their second unit for the school year. They are continuing from the first unit where they sang and danced to music using Do, Re, and Mi in F Do. In the second unit the students add in So to their singing patterns and music containing Do, Re, Mi, and So.
In F Do the notes on the staff would look like this:
This is also the time where the fixed letter names are introduced because while the letter names are fixed to either a line or space on the G clef staff the function of the note varies with the intoduction of a new key - G Do.
The students learn that a melody can sound higher or lower in pitch depending on where Do is on the staff. They also can diffentiate a song in F or G Do by the key signature. If they see a flat (b) after the G clef they know the song is in F Do. If they see a sharp (#) after the G clef they know the song is in G Do.
In G Do the notes on the staff would look like this:
The students practice different patterns in each Do and learn folk songs and dances that use Do, Re, Mi, and So in both keys (F and G). With the addition of So the students are also able to add xylophone accompaniement to their singing with very simple Tonic (I) and Dominant (V) functions to assist in their understanding of the form of music and what sounds like a correct accompaniement for the melody we are singing. Here is an example of one of the songs from our second unit called "Let us Chase the Squirrel" and how it looks in F Do and G Do:
