General Music

General Music class meets once a week for 30 minutes. The students are learning music in class much like a child learns a language.Kindergarten and First Graders are focusing on singing together and alone a varied repertoire of folk songs. They also work on keeping the beat through instrument performance and movement. Second Grade starts a three unit year where the students start seeing what music looks like. They sing, perform, and move to music in duple and triple meter, focusing on reading rhythms. Thrid Grade continues their reading by taking the rhythms from Second Grade and focusing on melodic reading in different keys. They start reading Do, Re, and Mi in F Do and then continue to add So in F Do and in G Do. The end of the year adds in more rhythmic reading. Fourth Grade is recorder year! The students take the rhythms and meloies they have learned in Second and Third Grade to an instrument. Reading music is difficult enough without adding an instrument. So, the students learn the same music they know how to sing and just add and instrument. They play in G Do most of the year and add D Do by the end of the year. Fifth Grade is the culmination of everything. The students read, move, and perform the rhyhm and melodic patterns they learned when they were younger and use them to read new songs. Fifth Grade is singing, instrument playing, and a lot of dancing. They learn basic folk dance steps and formations. Yes, they have to dance.......together.....holding hands....... the world might end.
