Fifth Grade

Fifth Grade general music is the culmination of their work over the past five years from singing, moving to, and keeping the beat to music in Kindergarten and First Grade. Learning what music looks like with rhythms in Second Grade and tonal reading in Third Grade. Adding an instrument to the skills they have already learned in Fourth Grade. Finally, in Fifth Grade they review all those skills in reading and performing music while also having the space to be creative in their experiences. Fifth Grade moves away from the specified units used in the younger grades and they have the opportunity to experience different aspects of music. Each week is a different class in many different areas. Some examples of classes are:

  • Listening to a piece of instrumental music (Russian Dance) and figuring out the form of the piece by listening for sections that repeat or new music is introduced and then performing with that piece with creative movement or the class parachute.

  • Composing a rhythmic piece of music as a class and then performing it on hand drums

  • Reading the music for a folk dance, figuring out the chords that go with the song, learn the folk dance and perform the dance the next week while singing the song. (Yes they all dance together)

  • Working in groups to create a body percussion piece to perform for the class.

  • Add a percussion part to a piece of classical music.

  • Improvise on a pitched percussion instrument using the blues scale.

  • They will spend most of the school year on learning ukulele. They will learn the basic chords - C major, A minor, F major, and G Major. If they master these chords they might move on to learn some more chords such as G7, D major, E minor, etc...
